Background:
Melissa began skating at the age of three because her mom was a skating coach at the AAFSC. She started competing at the age of five and continued to compete competitively for another 12 years. Her training took place mostly in Ann Arbor, St.Clair Shores, and at the World Arena in Colorado Springs, CO under coaches Diana Ronayne and Gary Clark. During this time, she participated in five Regional competitions and was a 1999 Juvenile Freestyle Junior National alternate. She was also the 2004 Michigan High School Novice Freestyle State Champion. In addition to her competitive accomplishments, she has passed her Gold field moves and Gold freestyle. She has a Bachelors degree from the University of Michigan and plans on attending graduate school for a Masters/Doctorate degree related to health care.
Experience:
Melissa has been coaching group lessons since 2003 and private lessons since 2005. Her students have successfully cometed at competitions both in and out of state. She was also the head coach of Dexter/Manchester/Saline High School figure skating team from 2006 - 2008, leading them to the State Championships both seasons. She is a member in good standing of the PSA and the USFSA and continues to educate herself by attending PSA seminars. Her passion is teaching freestyle and she enjoys helping skaters succeed at all levels. Along with promoting excellence and good sportsmanship on the ice, she also strives to teach her students lessons that will help them succeed in life outside the rink.
